This is very useful not only for travelers but also for residents who want to save on daily expenses.
When Supermarket Bento Boxes Go on Sale
Most supermarkets start their markdowns around 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
By 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM, it’s common to see 20% to 50% off stickers on bento boxes and deli items. In many stores, the last hour or two before closing is the "Final Markdown period", when prices drop even further.
The Discount Time at Department Store Food Halls
Department store food halls (known as Depachika) offer higher quality, more gourmet food, but prices tend to be a bit higher. However, as closing time approaches, great deals begin to appear.
Many department stores generally start marking down items around 7:00 PM, and one hour before closing, you can often find significant discounts.
Since depachika are very popular and often crowded, popular items can sell out quickly.

- Head to the deli section when you see staff starting to put out discount stickers. This is the best time to grab good items.
