日本に行く時に考えたいこと（にほんにいくときにかんがえたいこと）
皆様が日本を訪れるとき、仕事や観光など目的はさまざまですが、心に留めていただきたいことがあります。
それは「自分はお客様なのか、それともゲストなのか」という意識です。日本に古くから伝わる「郷に入っては郷に従え」という言葉が示す通り、訪れた国や地域にはそれぞれの習慣やルールがあります。それを理解し、できる限り尊重することで、相手に不快な思いをさせず、自分自身も心地よく過ごすことができるのです。
1. 法律と習慣の違いを意識する
海外では一般的であっても、日本国内では法律で制限されていることが少なくありません。例えば街中での写真撮影。観光地や街並みを撮る際に、他人の顔が写り込むことがありますが、そのままSNSやブログに投稿するのは注意が必要です。日本には「肖像権」という考え方があり、たとえ公共の場であっても、個人の顔や行動は保護の対象です。やむを得ず人が写り込んでしまった場合は、顔をぼかすなどの処理をしてから投稿しましょう。
2. 日本の治安の裏側にある厳しいルール
日本が世界でも有数の安全な国と言われる理由の一つは、法律の厳格な運用です。
万が一、警察に身柄を拘束された場合、日本の刑事事件の有罪率は99.9%とも言われています。さらに、逮捕されると長期間警察署に留め置かれる可能性があり、その間に自由に弁護士に相談できるとは限りません。
外国では合法でも、日本では違法とされる薬物や所持品もあります。旅行前に荷物をよく確認し、禁止されているものを持ち込まないよう徹底してください。
3. 日本ならではのマナーを尊重する
法律に限らず、日常生活に根付くマナーも日本を快適に過ごす鍵となります。電車内での通話は控える、列に並ぶときは順番を守る、公共の場では静かに過ごすなど、日本では「他人に迷惑をかけないこと」が重視されます。小さな気配りの積み重ねが、日本人との良好な関係を築く一歩となります。
海外から見ると「厳しい」と感じるルールもあるかもしれませんが、それらは日本社会の安全や秩序を支える大切な仕組みです。日本を訪れる際はぜひ「招かれたゲスト」としてその文化や法律を尊重し、安心で快適な滞在を楽しんでください。

Remember This Before Visiting Japan
When visiting Japan, whether for work or sightseeing, remember to keep this in mind: there’s a difference between being a "customer" and a respected "guest." As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” (Gō ni itte wa gō ni shitagae). Every country and region has its own customs and rules, and understanding them will help you enjoy your stay while avoiding discomfort or misunderstandings.
1. Be Aware of Legal and Cultural Differences
Japan has many restrictions that might be uncommon in other countries. For example, when taking photos on the street or at tourist spots, be careful about posting photos where other people’s faces are visible. Posting such photos on social media or blogs without permission requires caution. Japan has a concept of "portrait rights" (Shōzōken), meaning someone’s face and actions are protected, even in public spaces. If someone appears in your photo, it’s best to blur their face before sharing.
2. Strict Rules Behind Japan's Safety
Japan is known worldwide as a safe country, partly due to the strict enforcement of laws.
If the police ever detain you, the conviction rate for criminal cases in Japan is reportedly 99.9%. Furthermore, the police can hold arrested people in a police station for an extended period, and access to a lawyer during this time isn’t always guaranteed.
Be careful about drugs and other possessions that may be legal in your home country but illegal in Japan. Thoroughly check your luggage before traveling and ensure you don’t bring any prohibited items.
3. Respecting Unique Japanese Manners
Beyond legal matters, observing daily etiquette is key to a comfortable stay in Japan. For example, refrain from talking on the phone on trains, respect the queue and wait your turn, and remain quiet in public spaces. In Japan, they value “avoiding causing trouble to others”. Respecting these small considerations is the first step toward building good relations with Japanese people.
You might find some rules strict compared to your home country, but they are crucial mechanisms that support the safety and order of Japanese society. When visiting Japan, please come as an "invited guest," respect the culture and laws, and enjoy a safe and pleasant stay.
