外国の方から日本語が難しいと言われる理由（がいこくのかたからにほんごがむずかしいといわれるりゆう）
日本語を母語として話している人にとって、日本語は自然に身についた言葉なので「難しい」と感じることはあまりありません。ですが、日本語を学んでいる多くの方々からは「日本語はとても難しい」とよく言われてます。実際、世界の中でも習得が難しい言語の一つとして紹介されることがあります。
では、なぜ日本語は難しいと言われるのでしょうか。ここでは、その代表的な理由をいくつかご紹介します。
1. 文字が3種類ある
日本語ではひらがな・カタカナ・漢字の3種類の文字を使います。学習者はそれぞれを覚えるだけでなく、場面によって使い分ける必要があります。これは他の言語にはあまり見られない特徴です。
2. 漢字の多さと読み方
漢字は一つひとつ覚えるのが大変なうえに、同じ漢字でも複数の読み方があります。例えば「生」という字は「せい」「しょう」「なま」「いきる」など、文脈によって読み方が変わります。
3. 文法の違い
日本語の文法は、英語やヨーロッパの言語とは大きく異なります。例えば、英語は「主語＋動詞＋目的語（SVO）」の語順ですが、日本語は「主語＋目的語＋動詞（SOV）」が基本です。
- 英語: I eat an apple.
- 日本語: 私はリンゴを食べます。
さらに、日本語では主語を省略できることも多く、文脈によって意味が補われます。この柔軟さが日本語の面白さである一方で、学習者には戸惑いの原因になることがあります。
4. 敬語の複雑さ
日本語には丁寧語・尊敬語・謙譲語といった敬語があります。これは相手との関係性や場面によって使い分けなければならず、学習者にとってはとても難しい部分です。
5. 文脈を重視する文化
日本語では、はっきりと言葉にしなくても「空気を読む」ことで意味が伝わる場合が多いです。これは日本語の奥深さでもありますが、外国の学習者には理解しづらい点でもあります。

Why Is Japanese Considered a Difficult Language?
For native speakers, we naturally acquire Japanese, so we don’t usually find it difficult. However, many learners say Japanese is very hard to learn. In fact, they often list it as one of the most difficult languages in the world to master.
So, why is Japanese considered so difficult? Here are some of the main reasons.
1. Three Different Writing Systems
Japanese uses three types of characters: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Learners must memorize them and learn how to use them correctly depending on the situation. This is a unique feature not commonly found in other languages.
2. The Large Number of Kanji and Their Multiple Readings
Every kanji is difficult to memorize on its own, and to make it more complex, the same kanji can have multiple readings. For example, you can read the character 生 as sei, shō, nama, or ikiru, and the reading changes depending on the context.
3. Grammatical Differences
Japanese grammar differs significantly from that of English or other European languages. While English uses a "Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)" word order, Japanese is fundamentally "Subject + Object + Verb (SOV)."
Example:
- English: I eat an apple.
- Japanese: Watashi ha ringo wo tabemasu (A literal translation of the word order would be: I an apple eat).
Additionally, the Japanese language often omits the subject, with people understanding the meaning from the context. This flexibility makes the language interesting but can be confusing for learners.
4. The Complicated Keigo (Honorifics)
Japanese has a complex system of honorifics called keigo, which includes polite language (teineigo), respectful language (sonkeigo), and humble language (kenjōgo). Learners must master using the correct form based on their relationship and the social situation, which is a very difficult part of the language.
5. A Culture That Emphasizes Context
In Japanese, people often understand meaning without saying everything directly, by “reading the air.” This depth is unique but can be hard for learners to grasp.
Japanese is considered difficult because of its writing systems, kanji, grammar, honorifics, and cultural background. But it’s worth learning because it’s challenging, and studying Japanese deepens your understanding of Japanese culture.
