こうした教育の結果、公共の場での日本人の行動は、非常に秩序立って見えます。電車の中で静かにする、列にきちんと並ぶ、人前で大声で話さないなど、海外から賞賛されるようなマナーが自然と身についています。しかし一方で、「個人性が見えにくい」と言われることもあります。
たとえば、学校では制服があり、生徒は似たような髪型、持ち物で過ごします。職場でも、新人が上司の指示に忠実に従うことが求められ、目立つことを避ける傾向があります。これらはすべて、他人と違うことを“悪”とする空気の延長線上にあるのです。
もちろん、この文化が日本の秩序や社会的安定を支えていることは間違いありません。しかし、時代の変化とともに、個人の多様性や表現の自由が重要視されるようになってきています。
今後の日本に必要なのは、「和」と「個」のバランスかもしれません。
「空気を読む」ことも大切ですが、それによって自分の意見を押し殺したり、本当の自分を隠したりしてはいないでしょうか？あなたは、周囲との調和を保ちながら、自分らしさを表現できていますか？
In Japan, they’ve long respected the idea that “harmony should be valued”. This belief emphasizes the importance of maintaining group harmony and keeping in step with others. From an early age, they teach many Japanese people to avoid standing out and to “read the room” before acting.
As a result, Japanese behavior in public spaces tends to be very well organized. People remain quiet on trains, line up properly, and avoid speaking loudly in public. People from other countries often praise these behaviors, and most Japanese people adopt them instinctively. However, this collective culture often makes it difficult for individual personalities to stand out.
For example, schools often expect students to keep their appearance and belongings similar, including requiring them to wear uniforms. In the workplace, they expect newcomers to follow their superiors’ instructions closely and avoid standing out. These practices are an extension of a mindset where they see standing out as something negative.
Of course, this cultural mindset has played a crucial role in supporting Japan’s social stability and order. But as society changes, the recognition of the importance of diversity and self-expression continues to grow.
Perhaps Japan needs a better balance between “harmony” and “individuality”.
