Fireworks Festivals
In the summer, Japan holds firework festivals, where they launch many fireworks. Considered a summer tradition, firework displays are often featured at the end of summer festivals as well as other events. Currently, there are three major firework displays known as “Japan’s Three Major Firework Festivals”. They consist of The National Fireworks Festival (Omagari no Hanabi) in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, The Tsuchiura National Fireworks Festival in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Display in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture. In just one of these events, they launch around 20,000 fireworks.
Fireworks festivals date back to the Edo period in Japan. In 1733, when Tokugawa Yoshimune was shogun, they held a water God festival on the Sumida River to comfort famine victims and exterminate evil spirits. It’s said that fireworks were shot off at that time, which is the origin of today’s fireworks displays.
In the U.S., fireworks are more associated with Independence Day rather than the summer season. The first reported Independence Day celebration was on July 4th, 1777, in Philadelphia, where many fireworks lit up the night sky. From then on, it became an annual tradition that continues to this day.
