「を」 is used with verbs that express action and indicates that N is the object of the action.

• 何を食べますか。
  なに を たべます か。
  What will you eat?

  It snows a lot in winter.

  There is a telephone in my room.
• 歴史と数学がおもしろいです。
  れきし と すうがく が おもしろい です。

「は」 indicates that N1 is the topic of the sentence and can be used for stating N in comparison to other things. 「は」 cannot be used with interrogatives, but can be used with other particles.

• わたしは両親と住んでいますが、兄は一人で住んでいます。
  わたし は りょうしん と すんで います が、あに は ひとりで すんで います。
  I live with my parents, while my brother lives by himself.
• わたしは犬が好きですが、猫が嫌いです。
