One of Japan's unique features is its railroad system, which is best known for the Shinkansen (bullet train) operated by JR. However, there are also many other railroads in Japan, covering a total distance of 27,337 km (16,986 miles). Therefore, no matter where you are in Japan, you can get to almost anywhere by train. Of course, since Japan is an island nation, you cannot go to islands that are not connected by tunnels or bridges. Though you can go anywhere on the four islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, and Kyushu by train.
Also, in large cities like Tokyo and Osaka, subways and private railways are arranged like a spider's web. So you can reach your destination on time by train rather than by bus or cab on crowded roads.
Train schedules vary depending on the number of passengers, but the Yamanote Line, for example, which runs around the Tokyo metropolitan area, has trains arriving every few minutes. The Tokaido Shinkansen, which connects Tokyo and Osaka, departs Tokyo Station once every three minutes during rush hour and heads for Osaka.
As you can see when you visit Japan, most railways operate on time to the second. Also, there are almost no railroad accidents in Japan. The Shinkansen has not had a single operational fatality since its inauguration in 1964. In Japan, there is a JR Pass that allows overseas visitors to have an unlimited number of rides on JR trains for a set timeframe. I think it would be fun to see Japan by train.
